Information in this article applies to the web versions of Gmail and the Gmail mobile app for iOS and Android.

What Is Gmail?

Gmail is a free email service run by Google. It integrates with other Google services like Google Docs, Google Drive, and YouTube. Google also offers premium services to businesses through G Suite. There is also an HTML version of Gmail called Gmail Basic and a Gmail mobile app.

When you stay signed in to your account, you can use Google services soon as you open them. For example, you can quickly check your email in Gmail or see your past searches in Chrome. Stay signed in. To remove your Gmail account from your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars, tap on your Gmail account, tap Delete Account, and tap Delete from my iPhone. Next, go back to Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars, tap Add Account, tap Google, and enter your account information.

If you've never had an email account before, Gmail is a good place to start. It is reliable and free, and it comes with 15 GB of storage space for your messages. Your email is stored online, so you can access it from any device that can connect to the internet.

If you have another email account with a different provider, you may be able to link it to Gmail so that you can read all of your incoming messages in one inbox.

How to Get a Gmail Account

To create a new Gmail account, you must first create a new Google account.

  1. Go to Gmail.com and select Create account.

If other Google accounts have been used with your browser, you may be prompted to choose an account. Select Use another account at the bottom to get to the sign-in screen.

  2. Enter the requested information, then select Next.

It is possible to change the name that appears in the From: field after you set up your Gmail account.

  3. You may be asked to provide a phone number to verify your identity. Enter your phone number and select Next. Google will send you a text with a code that you must enter on the following page.

Your phone number is not stored. You must re-enter your phone number in the next step to link it to your Gmail account.

  4. Enter the requested information, then select Next.

Providing account recovery information is optional, but it can come in handy if you accidentally forget your password.

  5. Read Google's privacy information and select I agree.

  6. Choose a layout for your viewing your messages, then select OK.

You will automatically be taken to Gmail to set up your new account. You'll see a message from Google in your inbox, which contains important information about using Gmail.

You can use your new Google log-in credentials to access YouTube, Google Docs, and all other Google services.

How to Set Up Gmail

After reviewing the introductory information, you can personalize your account. For example, select Change profile image to add a photo that will be visible to other Gmail users. If you want to change the colors and layout of the Gmail interface, select Choose a theme. If you have another email account, select Import contacts and mail to link it to your new Gmail account.

How to Use Gmail

To send a new Gmail message, select Compose.

Select the Star beside a message to mark it as important.

To remove messages from your inbox, select the checkbox beside the message, then select Archive (the folder with a down-arrow) or Trash (the trashcan).

How To Keep My Gmail Signed In

Sending a message to the trash in Gmail does not automatically delete it. To permanently delete a message, select Trash from the left pane to open your trash folder, then select Empty Trash now.

To sign out of Gmail, select your profile icon (or image) in the top-right corner, then select Sign out.

How to Make Labels

Gmail labels make it easier to manage your inbox. While viewing a message, select the Label icon and choose from the options, or select Create new to make custom labels.

How to Find Emails in Gmail

In addition to using labels, you can search for the message using the search bar above your inbox. You can also use your Gmail contacts to find all correspondence with certain people.

If I am logged into Gmail and I quit my browser, then reopen it, I expect to find that I am no longer logged in. This is the way it used to behave.

Now unless I explicitly log out, it brings me right back to my inbox.

I have not checked 'stay signed in' at the Gmail login screen, and I've set Firefox to delete all cookies when I close the browser. What else do I need to do?

I'd accept a browser-based solution for this, but I'd really prefer an account setting in Gmail so that it applies to all machines and browsers that I may use.

I think this problem could be described as 'how can I ensure that session cookies are deleted when the browser is closed'. That would fit with the original idea of session cookies: they are for a single session.

How can I keep Gmail from maintaining my session?

Aha! As this blog post documents (inspired by this podcast):

It appears that for a while now, both Firefox and Chrome have, for the convenience of their users, restored session cookies between browser shut down and restart. This is convenient, but insecure. Only persistent cookies should restore in this way. A common example of the usage of persistent cookies is when you check “keep me logged in” or “remember me” when logging into a site.

Neither Mozilla nor Google seem inclined to revert to the correct secure behavior that IE has kept.

A case where IE is right! Egads, where are my heart pills!?

Here's how he shows to fix it.

Firefox

Browse to about:config, enter ‘sessionstore’ in the search box, and change browser.sessionstore.privacy_level from 0 to 2. Laxius power 1 game download.

Chrome

Under 'On Startup', don't select 'Continue where I left off'. Also:

Browse to chrome://flags, Press CTRL-F and enter ‘disable better’ to jump to the “Disable Better session restore” flag. Enable it.

For latest chrome version > 33. you need to open chrome://settings/content and select 'Keep local data only until you quit your browser' also in chrome://settings make sure option Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed is unchecked otherwise chrome will keep running in background and will not delete cookies

Do you maybe have GMail pinned as 'App Tab'? At least in Firefox, pinned App Tabs do not obey any automatically remove private data settings. Firefox remembers the current state of the tab and restores it when you open up the browser again.

Maybe you simply unpin GMail and set it as 'hompage'?

How To Keep Gmail Signed In On Iphone

It's simple for latest Firefox versions. Go to Firefox preferences and go to the history section where it says 'Firefox will:'. Default option for this might be 'remember history'. Change 'remember history' to 'Use custom settings for history'. Then click on Exceptions button near to the 'Use custom settings for history' option and you'll see a window(look the screenshot attached) that asks you to enter the url of the website to auto delete cookies from a website. Enter the url as accounts.google.com.

After you do these steps you would be automatically signed out of gmail when you close Firefox. Please note that you have to manually type the gmail user name each time you reopen Firefox browser.
